ULUMBAZA – our “House of Joy”

More than 200 years ago, this was a thatched stable. Today, it is ULUMBAZA — our wine bar, farm kitchen and informal front door to Springfontein.

The name Ulumbaza translates as House of Joy. We liked the name because it says something simple about what this place is meant to be: not a tasting room in the traditional sense, and certainly not a formal restaurant, but a place to settle in, drink something good, eat something honest and enjoy being here.

The old stable remains at the heart of it. Its thick walls, thatched roof and simple proportions are part of the character of the place. We have added what is needed for today’s use, but the building is still recognisably what it has always been — a working piece of the farm rather than a purpose-built hospitality space.

At ULUMBAZA, we pour the wines of Springfontein and Cape Moby, with the ULUMBAZA wines naturally at the centre of the bar. You can come for a guided tasting, taste at your own pace, order a glass or simply choose a bottle and stay for lunch or dinner. And, of course, you can take your favourites home with you.

The kitchen follows the same uncomplicated approach. Our seasonal Bar(n) Menu is built around regional produce and dishes that work naturally alongside the wines, while daily specials on the blackboard give the kitchen room to do something different when the ingredients call for it.

There is no particular ceremony required. Come for the wine. Stay for the food. Or just come and sit under the thatch for a while.
